First flight in 594 days — Part 2

Turns out Murphy’s law is real. When I woke up for the first time on July 1, it was 2 AM. I remember this because I checked the time on my phone screen. My alarm was set for 3.30 AM (or so I thought!), so I went back to sleep. When my eyes opened again, it was 5 AM. The alarm never went off! For only the 2nd time in my life, and 12 years after this had last happened, I had missed a flight.

I looked at my phone in disbelief and the first word that came out of my lips was “FUCK!”. I shook my wife and she also woke up with a gasp. My head starting making calculations for how quickly could we reach the airport if we left right away. After a minute or so we realized, that we couldn’t reach the airport before 6 AM, and by then it would be too late to catch the 6.30 AM flight.

We had made reservations to enter the Rock Mountain and had to enter the park by 1PM. We also had 1.5-hour drive from Denver to Rocky . So, we had to find seats on the next available flight that would take us to Denver by 11.30 AM. Even before I started looking for the next flight, I slapped myself, twice! I felt really guilt and irresponsible for not waking up on time! I blamed myself and the fact that my wife never blamed me for the situation made me feel worse about myself.

Pushing my guilt aside, we started looking for seats on the next Delta flight. Luckily there were 2 seats available for the 9AM flight. Paying $600 that we had not planned for definitely hurt, but in comparison to cancelling the entire, this was nothing. Taking the 9 AM flight would still allow us to reach Rocky by 1 PM. We called up our friends and informed them of the happy ending to the early morning drama.

Looks like Murphy had some good news for us, after all.

As our Uber approached the airport, I sensed a childlike excitement in my heart.Another relief was that the REAL ID implementation had been deferred till May 2023(due to Covid-19 delays). This allowed Temporary Work Visa holders like me who are not eligible to get Real ID’ s to continue using my Driving License as a form of Identification till May 2023.

Things were looking up.
